Mailman List Migration

CAS will be migrating current Mailman lists to the new Mailman system (Mailman version 3) in the summer of 2021. The old Mailman user interface has not aged well and lacks modern authentication abilities. The new system should resolve those problems, and others.

The current plan for list migration is as follow:

  • All lists will be migrated to new Mailman system that meet any of the following criteria:
    • Has at least one member (does not include the list admins or moderators)
    • Has been used at least once
    • Has a message archive present, meaning messages have been posted to the list and archiving is enabled (this is the default)
  • Priority will be given to lists that have been used since 01 January 2021.
  • Lists that have never been used, have no archive, and were created before 01 January 2021 will be deleted.

The migration process will carry over your member lists, administrators, and most settings. Additionally, the message archives will also be migrated over to the new system. Held messages and subscriber requests will not be migrated to the new system, so please tend to any pending moderator approvals before the migration of you list begins.

Q: How do I use the new Mailman3 system?

A: We have documented many of the common uses for the new system. You can view that documentation here. If you are unsure what a setting does, I highly recommend asking CAS about it first before making the change.

Q: How do I access the new Mailman3 system?

A: You can get to the new system by visiting https://mail.cas.unt.edu and clicking the link for the new Mailman3 system. Old bookmarks will need to be updated to reflect the new URLs if bookmarks were previosly used to access a list directly.

Q: When will my list be migrated?

A: We will be sending emails in advance to list admins with the date their lists will be migrated. We plan to have all lists migrated by 30 July 2021.

Q: Can I schedule a time to migrate my lists?

A: Absolutely! Please contact us and we will accomodate a day and time that works for you.

Q: Can you tell me what lists I manage?

A: We will be sending out a follow-up email to the list admins for each list. If you get an email for that list then you are one of the admins for it. Please contact us if you need a full list of all mailing lists you manage.

Q: After migration, my messages are bouncing when trying to post to my mailing list. What gives?

A: The new mailman system requires the use of the @cas.unt.edu domain instead of the @mail.cas.unt.edu domain. For example, cascssrocks-l@cas.unt.edu will post to the list, but cascssrocks@mail.cas.unt.edu will bounce. We have implemented a fix that should allow both domains again, but if the messages are still bouncing please contact us for assistance.
