Deep Freeze
DeepFreeze is system protection software used by the CAS Student Computer Labs (SCLs), Instructional Computing Lab (ICL), and College Lab Services (COLAS) to:
- help prevent operating system corruption and/or tampering
- help protect against virus and malware infections
- keep the computer file systems in a "clean" state
DeepFreeze does this by basically write-protecting the space of the computer hard drive that is in use, then creating a "virtual drive" in the unused space on the hard drive where all new files and changes are saved. Upon reboot, the virtual drive is eliminated, effectively removing any added files and restoring deleted or modified files back to their original state.
DeepFreeze is best used in an environment where multiple people use the same computer with little direct accountability or oversight. It is not useful (and would prove to be problematic) on single-user computer systems.
