Editing your site content in Drupal

How do I create a web page?

To create a web page, go to Content management » Create content » Page

In the "Title" field, type a descriptive title for your page. This title will be visible when users are accessing the page directly, or when you are viewing Content Management » Content List. In the "Body" field, type the content of your page, or copy and paste it from a Word document using the  icon in the editing toolbar.

How do I edit a page?

Once you are logged in, you can edit a page by navigating to the webpage in your browser, and clicking the "Edit" tab that appears above the page title.

Alternatively, you can go to Content Management » Content List, where you can view all nodes that you've created.

Find the title of the page you wish to edit, and click the "edit" link in the far right column of the row.

How do I create sub pages?

To create a sub page, simply follow the above steps to create or edit a page. Under the "Menu settings" tab, set the "Parent item" to the page from which you want your subpage to be accessible. You must also type a menu link title, even if it is the same as the page title.

How do I create and edit blocks?

To create a block, click Site Building » Blocks » Add Block in the administration menu at the top of your site.

To edit a block, go to Site Building » Blocks » List, and click the "Configure" link on the far right side of the title of the block you wish to edit. Alternatively, you can edit a block by clicking the "Edit" tab above the block.

How do I change the home page?

Every Drupal homepage is composed solely of blocks (and block regions). To see the list of these regions, go to Site Building » Blocks » List.

The home page regions are divided into top, middle, and bottom, with the middle region divided into left, middle, and right columns. Generally, departments choose to put slideshows or accordion slides in the "Home page - Top" region, an introduction in the "Middle/Main" region, and content such as faculty/student spotlights in the left- or right-hand sidebar. The placement, however, is completely up to you.

To change the Getting Started homepage, remove all of the blocks under the "Home page" regions by either dragging them to the "Disabled" block list at the bottom of the page, or by selecting <none> in the drop-down menu to the far right of each block. None of these changes are live and will not reflect on the homepage until you hit "Save blocks."

To add your own blocks to your homepage, you should first identify what elements would be most useful to your visitors. Some frequently-used homepage blocks are:

  • accordion: Accordion - this is for slideshows. You can add slides through Content Management Create Content Slideshow Slide.
  • news: Latest News - populates a list of most recent news articles with short blurbs. You can add news articles by going to Content Management Create Content Story.
  • spotlight: Faculty & Student spotlight blocks - highlights a particular faculty member or student for achievements, with a photo and short description. You can change the spotlight through Content Management Create Content Spotlight and designating whether it is a student or faculty member.

The most important thing about a homepage is for it to look recent and frequently updated.
