In the process of supporting our user's Macs, it is sometimes necessary to erase and reset a Mac. While we encourage users to maintain their own backups of their user data, we also want to ensure we make a full backup while servicing a Mac. Backups should also be made before a Mac is sent to Apple for any reason, even if a repair does not require it.
Time Machine
Using Time Machine on a managed machine can result in issues if you move the system files and applications see Exclude files during TM Backup, there is a selection for OS on the top left. Make sure to select the correct OS as this process is different in earlier versions of macOS (10.15 and earlier)
Time Machine is the backup solution built in to macOS. Time Machine can work with a drive accessible on the network, or via direct attached storage. By simply connecting a drive to a Mac, you will be prompted to select it as a backup destination. A Time Machine backup can be restored manually, or automatically through Migration Assistant.
Time Machine also supports local snapshots, which can be useful when attempting to reproduce issues, or when testing new deployment workflows.
Migration Assistant
If you are transferring user data to a brand new Mac, This will transfer as much user data as possible, including preferences and other account-specific items such as Keychain.
To use Migration Assistant on a managed Mac, you will want to have the user open Migration Assistant on both Macs, and select the source and destination Macs.
