Checkin and iCheckin

Checkin and iCheckin are a custom application created at UNT to manage access to and track usage of UNT's Student Computer Labs (SCLs), formerly known as "general access" labs. It has been expanded to serve additional needs, such as managing access to department-run computer labs and scheduling lab reservations.

Each lab's manager is typically responsible for managing that lab's specific configuration in the Checkin system.

Checkin

Checkin is a web-based application using UNT's LDAP system to verify and grant authorization to a student-use computer lab:

  • Checkin uses a person's EMPLID or EUID to verify authorization
  • Basic access requirements for SCL labs are one of the following:
    • enrollment at UNT in the current or previous semester
    • currently-employed UNT faculty of staff member
    • registered visiting scholar
  • Departmentally-run student computer labs may have stricter requirements:
    • enrollment at UNT in the current semester
    • enrollment in at least one course taught by department
    • enrollment in one or more specific courses and/or sections

Checkin is typically run (via web browser) by a departmental employee at a help desk located at the lab's entrance, where the employee assigns a lab patron to a specific workstation.

iCheckin

iCheckin is merely a series of scripts that run when a patron logs in to a computer station. These scripts take the patron's EUID and sends it to the Checkin system, which verifies the patron's authorization. If the patron is not authorized to use the computer lab, iCheckin then does a forced logout of the patron.

iCheckin is typically used in lieu of having an employee check patrons in at a front desk, thus freeing up the employee to concentrate on other tasks, such as assisting patrons with problems or answering questions.

Installation

To request Checkin or iCheckin be implemented for a CAS-supported departmental student-use computer lab, please contact the CAS College Lab Services (COLAS) team at colas@cas.unt.edu or call 940-565-2201.
