He was a chemist at the University of Berlin who "rediscovered" niobium (Hatchett's columbium) by showing that nobium and tantalum (which Wollaston thought were identical) were indeed different. He analyzed many minerals provided by his brother Gustav Rose, who was a mineralogist-geologist at the same university. It was he who gave the final name to niobium.
