He was a German chemist and assistant to Robert Bunsen, analyzing mineral water for the government of Baden in the 1860's. He was a significant contributor to both organic and inorganic chemistry. He is best known for inventing an apparatus for determining vapour densities, the Viktor Meyer apparatus, and for discovering thiophene in benzene which had been derived from coal tar, a heterocyclic compound. In some of his publications he is referred to as Victor Meyer.
