John W. Draper

1811-1882

 

	He was the first President of the American Chemical Society. Professor at Hampden-Sidney College, Virginia, then New York University, he conducted research in phosphorescence and photography. He first proposed spectroscopy as a method for studying the chemical composition of stars.
