Here are bottles that could have been used early in Liebig's career. An atom with a slash means two such atoms; a dot means an oxygen atom. Hence, the first bottle holds N2O5H2O (nitric acid, HNO3), the second bottle SO3H2O (H2SO4, sulfuric acid), and the third bottle NaOH2O (the valence was not yet understood for sodium; the compound's formula is actually NaOH, sodium hydroxide).
