"Le hangar" ("The Shed") where the pioneering work on radium and polonium were performed, was once a medical surgeon's barn. This is reminiscent of Wurtz' situation at Le Cordelier where his laboratory was once used as medical studios. After polonium and radium were discovered in the "storeroom" {LINK to parisF142} in 1898, the major separations were performed on tons of pitchblende in "The Shed" during 1899-1904.
