The observatory. In February of 1851 Jean Bernard Léon Foucault (1819-1868) proclaimed to all scientists, "Vous êtes invités à venir voir tourner la terre . . ." ["You are invited to see the earth turn"] as he set up his famous pendulum in the Observatory and presented the first public demonstration of the rotation of the earth. The grander demonstration was set up in the Panthéon a few weeks later (see above).
