"The first plant André Citroën, dedicated to the war effort, was built in 1915 on land previously occupied by "Cloches à melon," the last vestige of the many gardens on the Seine. Teams, mostly female, took turns day and night to make 75mm canon shells, up to 50,000 per day. In 1918, André Citroën changed the factory over to producing cars, then an uncommon means of transport. The first car came out of the factory off an assembly line in 1920."
