Carl Gustav Mosander

1797-1858

He was a professor of chemistry and mineralogy at the Caroline Institute, Sweden, and curator of the mineral collections at the Stockholm Academy of Sciences, who discovered lanthana, didymia, erbia, and terbia. Mosander was the first to appreciate the complexity of the rare earths when he extracted the first two rare earths from cerium and the latter two rare earths from yttria. He created didymium (a mixture of neodymium and praseodymium).
