Andreas Sigismund Marggraf

1709-1782

He was a German chemist who recognized alumina in clay and that magnesia was distinct from calcium compounds. He distinguished between potash and soda and dramatically demonstrated the difference between the two saltpeters — cubic saltpeter (NaNO3) gave a yellow flash in gunpowder and prismatic saltpeter (KNO3) gave a blue flash.
