The maiden name of Marie Curie was Skłodowska; her father Wladyslaw Skłodovska taught physics and mathematics. Notice that some of the "l" letters (including "Skłodowska") have a slash – this means they are pronounced as the English "w" instead of "l." Hence Skłodowska is not pronounced "sklo-dov-ska" but instead "skwo-dov-ska."
