In the city library of Salzgitter is this painting (dated 1905) showing the St. Marie-Jacobi church prominently, which identifies the old salt works location (which is not seen because of other buildings). Beyond the church is the chemical manufactory (Chemischen Fabrik), organized in 1790 by Ludolf von Unger, in association with the apothecary Wagenfeld in Hildesheim, 25 km to the west. It was in the Hildesheim apothecaries that the discolored zinc preparations were reported. The immediate source of the zinc was from the Goslar area in Rammelsberg {LINK: Goslar and Rammelsberg}, 10 km south. The Salzgitter Fabrik, which was affiliated with the original Saltwerke, produced magnesia, tartaric acid, sulfur, zinc and ammonia compounds, oils and extracts, and other pharmaceutical products.
