This is the site of Harz Metals in Oker, the site of an old sulfuric acid works next door. According to Crookes' records, in 1850 he was given "ten pounds of the seleniferous deposit from the sulfuric acid manufactory at Tilkerode" {LINK: to Tilkerode}, but no such sulfuric acid works existed at the time at Tilkerode. Instead, it appears that the Tilkerode ore was processed in Oker. A record in Nebenmetalle, Stuttgart, 1966 by J. Fieser states that in Oker the first sulfuric acid works was built in 1846, and that that thallium was first procured from the "lead [Pb] chamber sludge" ("Bleikammerschlamm") of an Oker sulfuric acid manufactory in 1862, at which time there were four such works in Oker. In close chronological agreement, Crookes reported his discovery of thallium in 1861.
