"Uraninite (pitchblende) UO2 [the black mineral] with torbernite [the green mineral] and uranocker [= gummite; the yellow mineral], original sample for discovery of uranium. Johanngeorgenstadt, Erzgebirge [mountain range]." There is confusion in the literature about what mineral furnished the original discovery of uranium. Klaproth originally found uranium in the green torbernite, but he processed quantities of pitchblende to procure sizeable quantites of the element for study. Torbernite is a copper uranyl; gummite is an amorphous yellow mineral, composed of various oxides, hydroxides, and silicates.
