Previous | Home | NextThe plaque to the right of the library door tells us: "Zehentstadel, built in the 16th century. Since 1808 was an official granary. 1811-1965 was a brewery. Renovated 1984-1987." A "Zehentstadel" is an old expression, dating to more than four hundred years ago. "Zehentstadel" translates as "tenth-storage shed," meaning that a tenth of everyone's production was taxed and stored here. So if a farmer had produced ten sacks of grain, he would deliver one sack here as a tax. Cereals, wine, geese, chickens, and bread. etc., were similarly taxed and stored here. This Zehentstadel was being used when Paracelsus lived here in Beratzhausen.
