"Originally placed in the quadrangle at the southern corner of the
court of Ernests [see above, "cour aux Ernests'], Rue d'Ulm, the
Physics Laboratory of ENS was established here in 1940, and really took
off after the War, with a new director Yves Rocard. With more space, professors
and researchers came to develop a new definition of innovative geophysics,
physics of solids, and in particular semiconductors, radio astronomy and
particle physics and high energies. Since 1950, expansion has reached
Nançay [160 km south of Paris; radio telescope], Meudon (LINK:Paris6-092],
and other centers. By developments of its resources and openness to experimentation,
ENS has played a large role in the renewal of French science."
