Another watershed experiment -- perhaps conducted in this fireplace -- was Cruickshank's analysis of Priestley's "heavy inflammable air" (carbon monoxide), which Priestley thought was merely another form of "ordinary inflammable air" (hydrogen), and both of which he considered to be merely different forms of phlogiston {LINK: Birmingham}. In 1802 Cruickshank showed that Priestley's "heavy inflammable air" was an oxide of carbon, thus destroying forever any credence to the idea of phlogiston.
