The houses on Church Row date from Queen Anne's (1665-1714) and George III's (1738-1820) time.
Lockyer's observatory was at his home at 24 Fairfax Road, which had been built up in the 1850s (then known as Victoria Road). Fairfax Road is parallel to the railroad, which had existed prior to the 1850s housing development. Lockyer had just moved here in 1865 from Wimbledon.
