These twenty-five samples of compounds were prepared by Crookes in 1863, at his home laboratory at Mornington Road {LINK: London4-004}. This photo was taken in 1999 in the Science Museum.
When the authors returned to the museum in 2001, this exhibit as well as hundreds more, had been removed and the exhibition areas have been replaced by "interactive" exhibits. This regrettable change of museum culture has been prompted by a decision by authorities, generally throughout Europe and America, to satisfy an audience which desires a "flashier" form of entertainment (A notable exception to this trend is the Deutsches Museum in Munich {LINK: Munich (Munchen)006}). The removed items and exhibits have been taken into archival storage and may be viewed only with special permission.
The following 24 slides shows photos taken by the authors during their 1999 visit to the Science Museum. The authors have viewed some of the archived items in the Science Museum in subsequent trips, but special permission and paperwork was required to use the camera and hence no more photos have been taken.
