Rudolph brought some of the best alchemists to his court, such as Edward Kelley (1555-1597) and John Dee (1527-1608). Kelly declared he could summon spirits on a crystal ball and claimed to be able to transmute base metals into gold. Dee was an astrologer, mathematician, and geographer who was a consultant to Elizabeth I, queen of England ; he was an ardent proponent of British exploration and expansion [he coined the term "British Empire"]. Later he attempted to commune with the angels to understand the underlying spiritual foundations of the world. After a short stay with Rudolph, he returned to England.
