Frederick Soddy
1877-1956
He was a professor of chemistry at Glasgow,Scotland, Aberdeen,Scotland, and Oxford, England, who showed that when a radioactive element ejects an alpha particle it shifts two atomic numbers to the left in the periodic table, and when the element emits an electron it moves one atomic number to the right. This observation explained the creation of radioactive isotopes. He is credited with the codiscovery of protactinium (eka-tantalum), with Cranston and Fleck. | ||
