Lord Kelvin was his title; his real name was William Thomson. He was famous for his pioneering work in thermodynamics. A famous scene occurred between him and Ernest Rutherford when Rutherford suggested the age of the earth was much older than Lord Kelvin thought -- the reason being that Lord Kelvin's estimates on the cooling of the earth did not take into account radioactive elements in the earth's interior.
