This empress, born Princess Frederica Louise Charlotte Wilhelmina of Prussia, was wife of Tsar Nicholas I. She became empress in 1825 when Nicholas I ascended to the throne. Nicholas I (1796-1855) was Tsar when Mendeleev first arrived in St. Petersburg in 1850.
