The Metrology Institute was originally organized as the Depot of Standard Weights and Measures in 1842, and reorganized into the Head Office of Weights and Measures in 1893 which Mendeleev joined. In 1945 it was given its modern name, and today is not only the center of standardization of of weights and measures, but also sponsors many research programs.
