This is the land of Berezovsky, a gold-mining district 10 km to the northeast of Ektaterinburg, in the heart of the Ural Mountains. Gold mines here supplied the "red lead of Siberia" (crocoite, PbCrO4) which Vauquelin in Paris analyzed to discover chromium. Berezovsky is named for the birch tree -- "Bereza" means "birch" and "Berezovsky" loosely means "Birch-tree-ville."
