Many names have changed since this historic map. At this time, the entire area is Hungary ("Ungarn") which was three times its present size, covering not only present Hungary, but also western Romania and Slovakia -- that is, the Carpathian Basin, plus the surrounding Carpathian Mountains to the north and east. Clarke's route (from east to west) is in bold in the previous map, and is highlighted in red in this key.
