This picture inside the meeting hall dates from 1845, but accurately depicts the scene of the Chemical Congress. The meeting was held in the "Second Chamber" (zweiter Kammer) in the west side of the Ständehaus. Countries represented included Belgium, Germany, England, France, Italy, Mexico, Austria, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Spain. Scientists whose names modern students may recognize include Kekulé, Beilstein, Bunsen, Erlenmeyer, Roscoe, Abel, Dumas, Thénard, Wurtz, Schützenberger, Blomstrand, Marignac, Cannizzaro, Meyer, and Mendeleev.
