"The Danish astronomer Olaus Römer 1644-1710 discovered the speed of light at the Observatory of Paris in 1676." He made this discovery by observing eclipses of the moons of Jupiter, noticing discrepancies between the times of eclipses when Jupiter was close or farther away from the earth. He did no precise calculation, but his discovery that the speed of light was finite was an important understanding in the progress of physics.
