The École des Mines has several interesting portraits, one of which is of Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu, professor of the École des Mines who discovered a "limestone" in the Tyrols of northeast Italy which did not effervesce in weak acid. Instead of having CaCO3 (limestone), he had discovered "dolomite" with the formula CaMg(CO3)2. This range of mountains are today well-known and are called the "Dolomites." Dolomite forms the foundation of the Great Lakes of the United States.
