Previous | Home | NextWhen Jean-Baptise Courtois (the father of Bernard Courtois, the discoverer of iodine) moved to Paris from Dijon {LINK: to Dijon}in1802, they settled at Rue Sainte-Marguerite, then on the outskirts of Paris. A view of the Rue Sainte-Marguerite is shown in this Turgot map view (as usual for the Turgot map series, the view is southeast). Courtois set up a saltpeter industry, as in Dijon, which they carried out in their nitrière{LINK: to Dijon} in back of their home. In this Turgot map view, the "Enfants Trouvés" at the right is for "abandonned children" (orphanage). In our walk, we will walk up past the "Enfants Trouvés" and turn left on Rue Sainte-Marguerite -- except that the orphanage is gone and Rue Sainte-Marguerite has been renamed to Rue Trousseau.
