Turku, Finland/406Previous | Home | NextThis is a drawing of Turku from a point northeast of the university. Translation of inscription (from Swedish): "General view over Åbo at Johan Gadolin's time. The first chemical laboratory of the Academy was comprised in the house nearest behind the cathedral chancel. The hill in the middle of the background is Vårdberget, on which's slope Gadolin had his garden and private laboratory. Pencil drawing by L. J. Desprez. The Royal library in Stockholm." The location of the artist is perhaps a little north of the modern Chemistry Building ("Gadolinia"). The chemical laboratory itself cannot be discerned in this drawing, but would be behind the polygonal dome to the left of the cathedral spire. Drawing, courtesy Pekka Pyykkö. |
