He found the density (weight) of nitrogen prepared from the atmosphere was slightly, but definitely, different from that of nitrogen prepared by ammonia. These observations in the 1880s were unexplained until he and Ramsay {LINK: London2D-080} realized the difference was due to a small amount of argon in the atmosphere.
