The Manaccan area was the main drainage for the ilmenite sand, northward along the Gillan Creek valley, past Menaccan, then eastward to Falmouth Bay (just out of view). Tregonwell Mill was the site where the ilmenite sand was collected. The Manaccan area is composed mostly of the Roseland breccia formation, a complex mixture of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. The ophiolites, from which the ilmenite was extracted by erosion, begin just at the bottom of the defined Manaccan area. The "black sand" can be found all along the Gillan Creek, and can actually be collected today by panning (see below).
