This painting (located in the Mill Hill Chapel), depicts the rustic scenery prevalent south of the Aire River during the late 1700s. At the time of Priestley's stay in Leeds, this area was still rural, with open fields and only a few buildings (after all, the main road was called "Meadow Lane"!). The few industries included the Old Brewery and the Leeds Pottery works (further south, off the map). With coal deposits, ample water but higher ground to avoid flooding, and with clay deposits for brick production, the area was set up for major industrialization, which swept into the area in the middle 1800s.
